The U.S. Capitol
The Capitol is among the most architecturally impressive and symbolically important
buildings in the world. The Senate and the House of Representatives have met here for
more than two centuries. Begun in 1793, the Capitol has been built, burnt, rebuilt,
extended, and restored; today, it stands as a monument not only to its builders but
also to the American people and their government.
The United States Capitol is a monument, a working office building, and one of the most
recognizable symbols of representative democracy in the world. Visitors are welcome to
enter the building through the Capitol Visitor Center, located underground on the east
side of the Capitol.
There are so many ways to tour the monuments, memorials, and other historic sites around Washington D.C. Take the Old Town Trolley, hop on a Double Decker Sightseeing Tour Bus, or even ride the D.C. Duck Tour that visits sites by land and by water! Make sure you visit their website for more information about the Senate and House of Representatives!
